Gilji today released new research revealing that up to 40% of job postings online may be "ghost jobs" – listings that companies post with no immediate intention of filling.
The Ghost Job Problem
The study, which analyzed patterns across major job boards, found that ghost jobs waste an average of 27 days per job seeker on applications that will never receive responses.
"Ghost jobs are one of the most frustrating aspects of modern job searching," said the Gilji team. "Job seekers spend hours tailoring applications for positions that don't actually exist. We're building technology to bring transparency to this process."
Key Findings
- 40% of job postings show signs of being ghost jobs
- 68% of job seekers have applied to at least one ghost job
- 27 days average time wasted per job seeker on ghost applications
- 73% of jobs posted for 60+ days are likely ghost jobs
Why Companies Post Ghost Jobs
The research identified several common reasons:
- Building talent pipelines for future openings
- Testing market conditions and salary expectations
- Projecting growth to investors and competitors
- Compliance with internal posting requirements
- Forgotten listings from past hiring needs
